Hiring Mike Vrabel And The Patriots’ 6 Best Moves Of The Offseason

The quietest part of the New England Patriots’ calendar is nearly over. Veteran players report to camp Tuesday. On Wednesday, practices begin in earnest.

At this point, it’s easy to forget all that has happened in the blur of a crazy offseason for the Patriots. So on the eve of players reporting to camp, here’s my take on the team’s best moves this offseason.

Hiring Mike Vrabel

This is an obvious one, but it’s an important place to start. While moving on from Jerod Mayo and nabbing Vrabel seems obvious in hindsight, Robert Kraft could have insisted that Mayo deserved another year, especially given the lack of talent on last year’s roster.

But Kraft admitting he was wrong about Mayo and pivoting to a Patriots Hall of Famer, one who was one of the two best coaches on the market, was the right move. That has been especially clear as we’ve seen how well run and organized the Pats have been with Vrabel in charge.

I still have questions about how Vrabel is going to get the most out of this just-OK roster and what the offense will look like, but there’s no question in my mind that he was the right hire.
